Planning ranges by miles moved, built from cost guides by five publishers (updated 2024-2026): AngiAngi, BraustinBraustin, LocalMovers.comLMLM, This Old HouseTOH and HomeGuideHG. Where they disagree, we lean toward the high end. See each source's spread. Escort (pilot car) fees run $1.50-$3.50 per mile per vehicleHGBraustin. Planning ranges, not quotes: Actual quotes need an on-site look at your home and the new site, and can be higher than these ranges. What's often not included.

Rough planning-cost calculator

A planning range, not a quote. Often not included, or priced separately (ask what each quote covers):

  • Site prep and grading
  • Foundation, piers and anchoring
  • Skirting
  • Utility hookups: power, water and sewer or septic, gas
  • Decks, steps and porches
  • AC units
  • Axle or tire replacement
  • Permits and inspections at the new site
  • Repairs found during teardown

Actual quotes need an on-site look at your home and the new site, and can be higher than these ranges.

How it works: base ranges by size and distance come from five publishers' cost guides (Angi, Braustin, LocalMovers.com, This Old House, HomeGuide)AngiBraustinLMLMTOHHG, leaning toward the high end. Escorts are $1.50-$3.50 per mile per vehicleHGBraustin and are added only to the top of the range, because many quotes already include them. How many escorts a home needs, and what permits cost, are set by each state; they are not included unless you pick a state guide that has them.

Every move involves three kinds of paperwork

  1. Transport permits. A home moving to a different county or state may need permits for each place it crosses or enters; most movers get them and include the cost in the estimatehg.
  2. Local permits where the home is going: zoning, setup and utility hookups. Moving on your own property may still need a permit and must meet local zoning ruleshg.
  3. A properly licensed installer, where the state requires one. The federal installation program covers only a new home's first installation; after that, states may regulate later installations24 CFR 3286.2. How to check a mover or installer.
